Inventor of barbed wire. Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire in 1873. He was partnered with Isaac Ellwood until 1876, when Glidden left the wire business. Other business ventures included running a hotel, partnership in a Texas ranch with Henry B. Sanborn, and founding the local DeKalb newspaper. Bertha Glidden Bradt was active in DeKalb, Illinois women's organizations and did extensive genealogical research. Her husband, Samuel Ellsworth Bradt (1861-1938), was a DeKalb businessman and banker.
